Project Overview

Indonesia’s National Strategic Projects program has completed multiple major dams between 2016 and 2025, representing billions in investment for agricultural development, renewable energy, and climate resilience. Structures like the Jatiluhur Dam in West Java irrigate nearly 10,000 hectares, generate 6.34 megawatts of electricity, and reduce flooding by 30%.

Between 2018 and 2024, Roctest instrumentation was deployed across at least six major Indonesian dams, including Tiu Suntuk Dam in West Nusa Tenggara, providing critical safety monitoring data.

Challenges

A dam without proper monitoring is a disaster waiting to happen. When massive structures hold back millions of cubic meters of water, continuous monitoring is essential for protecting communities and infrastructure. Engineers must detect potential failures before they become catastrophic by measuring stress, temperature, deformation, uplift pressure, and seepage.

Large dams create unique instrumentation challenges. Heavy construction equipment can damage installations, creating monitoring gaps. Instruments face aggressive environments with mechanical stress and lightning exposure that can destroy electronics and render monitoring inoperable. Installation precision is critical—air gaps or aggregate contact in pressure cells create false readings that mask actual behavior.

Solution

Roctest’s integrated solutions deliver quantitative data through four key instruments. Vibrating Wire Piezometers monitor pore water pressure with zone-specific configurations: stainless steel filters for foundations, ceramic filters for embankments, and extended ranges for deeper elevations. Total Pressure Cells measure actual stresses with installation techniques ensuring perfect material contact. Inclinometer Systems track lateral deformation and slope stability, while Extensometer Systems monitor vertical and horizontal movement.

Enhanced protection measures include physical barriers and protected cable routing to prevent construction damage. IRC 390 cables provide strength for mechanical stress, and lightning protection preserves system integrity.

Conclusion

Roctest’s monitoring solutions protect Indonesia’s critical dam infrastructure during construction and throughout operational lifespans. Our instrumentation provides the quantitative foundation for confident decision-making about billion-dollar assets serving millions. From initial construction through decades of operation, Roctest delivers continuous assurance that vital structures remain safe, stable, and serving their essential purpose—infrastructure protection built on five decades of proven expertise.
